Description: 

Through the Education and Literacy Materials Partnership, Australia is supporting the Alola Foundation to train primary and pre-school teachers, and provide mobile library services to schools and communities throughout Timor-Leste. The partnership is developing multilingual learning resources, including reading materials in Tetun for early grades of primary school. The partnership is also supporting a pilot of mother-tongue education in three districts. Scholarships for disadvantaged girls are also assisting with education costs and living expenses such as transport, food and clothing, for three years of secondary school.

The East Timor English Language Program (ETELP), managed and implemented by Indonesian Australia Language Foundation (IALF) aims to increase the english language ability of lecturers at UNTL who are teaching the english language components of the Bachelor of Education. ETELP works with UNTL on improving pre-service training delivery and curricula, and is developing a pilot in-service teacher training program for school teachers.

In partnership with the World Bank, Australia is supporting a range of analytical work, including a nation-wide school survey.

Australia is supporting the Catholic Institute for Teacher Education (Baucau) provide its highly recognised Bachelor of Teaching to approximately 150 student teachers annually. The Bachelor of Teaching trains student teachers in the basic education cycle (grades one to nine), including student teachers from remote and disadvantaged areas. Final Project Results: 

* Through Alola in 2012 Australia provided 208 Scholarships for Girls, delivered around 94,000 children's readers in Tetun to all primary schools in Timor-Leste, and provided teacher training to 58 teachers on multilingual education in three pilot districts (Manatuto, Lautem and Oecusse). Additional training was provided in book making.   *ETELP beneficiaries have included 10 lecturers at the UNTL English Department (pre-service). Upto 200 Students studying the B. Education at UNTL have benefitted from improved teaching effectiveness. Additionally, the UNTL community have benefitted from a well resourced, English Language Resource Centre.   * In partnership with the World Bank and Ministry of Education, a comprehensive education survey was conducted covering every school in Timor-Leste. The findings of this survey will provide a better understanding of the challenges and needs at the school level.   * Through the Catholic Institute for Teacher Education, Australia supported the provision of a Bachelor of Teaching program to approximately 150 student teachers annually.
