Improve the quality of basic education through provision of curriculum support materials to all students and teachers.
CARE International Timor-Leste’s Lafaek project supported basic education and promoted the development of literacy, numeracy and basic life skills for children in primary schools and pre-secondary schools so that they can become productive, contributing citizens of their new country. The educational materials also reach families and were used to teach adult literacy, numeracy and basic skills at the village level. Lafaek Magazines were produced 4 times per year, in 4 editions: Lafaek, Lafaek Prima, Lafaek Ki’ik (Junior) and Lafaek teacher magazine. They were distributed to all pre-schools, primary and pre-secondary schools, and also to some adult education classes and community libraries. Radio Lafaek, a weekly radio programme which was based on the contents of the magazines, was heard in all 13 districts via RTL and 11 community radio stations. An annual competition provided opportunities for participation and the development of critical thinking and creative expression.
