WFP has continued to improve cooking facilities by constructing school kitchens, building and installing fuel efficient and biogas stoves for targeted stoves. The stoves in particular proved to be essential for school meals preparation and reduced the burden of students carrying firewood from home for cooking and eliminated smoke related health risks for school cooks and children.

FUEL EFFICIENT STOVES (FES)
By end of Q2, 109 Fuel efficient stoves (FES) had been completed and handed over to the communities. These stoves have proved to be efficient compared to the traditional 3 open fire stone stoves commonly used by the beneficiaries. According to the survey conducted, the traditional 3 open fire stone would take about 22 minutes to prepare a simple meal whereas the new Fuel efficient stove only takes 15-17 minutes. The traditional 3-open fire stone stove would on average utilise firewood worth 1 cu.m/week. The new FES uses less than ½ cu.m of firewood per week. This further contributes to protection of a healthy environment through reduction of deforestation. In schools where the stoves have been installed, students are carrying less firewood compared to before. With the traditional 3-open stone stoves, smoke would circulate inside the kitchen thus exposing the cooks to respiratory related diseases. With the new FES, smoke is channelled outside the kitchen through the chimney. Further benefits can be viewed from a success story of one of the beneficiaries using the stove. Here is a success story from one of the beneficiaries using the stove; “When the stove was built, WFP field staff told us that we would save a lot of wood. At first I did not believe them, but then I realized the truth and the stove has really changed a lot of things in my life. We cut down fewer trees for firewood and the children have more time to study. My family does not get eye and lung infections like they used to when there was too much smoke in the kitchen, I have experienced fewer burns, and I no longer suffer from back pain because the stove is a suitable height for cooking. Before, when I cooked on the ground on an open-pit fire I used 4 bundles of wood a week. Now, with my new stove, I only need 1/3 of what I used to and there is no need for thick logs. I am very happy with my stove and it is really helping me. I wish that all families had an EcoLogic stove like me, so we would all be helping to conserve the forest and live healthier lives.”
