Description:
Maternal and child health is a key focus of the Australian Government's program of assistance. Australia is helping to provide safe motherhood across East Timor by supporting Marie Stopes International Australia to establish a reproductive health centre in Dili with outreach services to rural areas. Australia is also supporting Health Alliance International to support safe delivery sites in the districts, provide hands-on skills training to midwives, and ensure more advanced treatment is given to mothers and babies. Australia will continue the support to family planning services as it is proven to be one of the most effective, value-for-money ways to reduce maternal deaths. Australia will design an integrated program to family planning and sexual reproductive health services by coordinating a number of current separate activities and leveraging support to the sub-sector and expanding the geographical coverage to national wide. DFAT initiative INJ035 and INK433.
Final Project Results:
In 2012, HAI staff supervised home visits with 57 PSF to pregnant women and their families. An estimated 5,286 people viewed the Planeamentu Familiar film and participated in guided discussions on key film messages after watching the film. HAI staff conducted 9 men's advocacy meetings in 2012, attended by a total of 249 community members. PSFs (and HAI staff) delivered health messages on maternal and newborn care topics to approximately 3,651 community members during 2012, and family planning specific messages reached an additional 341.
Between January and June 2013, MSITL provided health services to 21,285 people across Timor-Leste. Services include: 77 MSITL mobile clinics in remote locations; MSITL attended and supported 192 SISCa events; and visited 709 government facilities to support government health providers. MSITL delivered 22,690 family planning services, 4,932 safe motherhood services, 990 STI treatments, and educated 33,541 people.
