This project is an additional financing for Loan 3020/3021 which will (i) reconstruct or upgrade and climate proof about 117 kilometers (km) of principal national roads, (ii) expand the road maintenance program of the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Communications (MPWTC), and (iii) prepare detailed designs and environmental and social due diligence for upgrading 169km of principal national roads. In collaboration with other development partners, the project will support the progressive upgrading of the whole of the national road network.

The activities that are to be financed specifically by this grant and which will contribute towards the objective of climate resilience are (i) physical measures to counter climate change variability and extreme events, (ii) expanding knowledge and understanding of climate change amongst policy makers, planners and engineers, (iii) implementation of community based approaches to sustainable watershed management, (iv) development of adaptation measures in maintenance practice and (v) establishment of improved linkages between climate-change and transport sector professionals.

The outcome will be that the MPWTC provides a more reliable and safer road network.

The  road sector development with an intended impact of contributing to economic growth and poverty reduction in the Project area. Its objective is to enable the Ministry to provide a more reliable and safer road network.
