AusAID’s contribution to the education sector in 2012 incorporated a number of components. Australia has supported the provision of training to senior staff within the Ministry of Education in the field of management and leadership, allowing better implementation of the National Education Strategic Plan. Support has also been provided to the Ministry of Education to undertake a school survey to gather data from every basic education school in Timor-Leste that will allow for better education planning. AusAID provided support to strength the English teaching and language skills of Bachelor of Education students at UNTL through training lecturers to deliver the english language components of the Bachelor or Education curriculum. Funding has been provided to the Alola Foundation for learning materials for early grade education to increase learnign achievment, as well as provision of scholarships to support girls to undertake secondary and university education.

The Australian Education Program focuses on providing benefits directly to the school level. This means helping more children to go to school at the right age, stay at school and learn better.  Our priorities include teacher training, provision of books and other education materials, construction and rehabilitation of classrooms, school toilets and other school infrastructure, and targeted support to the Government of Timor-Leste to deliver education services to its people more effectively and efficiently.

(EXPECTED) Bursaries for 130 girls to complete high school, and for 78 existing scholarship awardees to continue on to university; 8 early grade readers, 2 international children’s books and one numeracy booklet translated into three mother tongue languages and 150 teachers train in their use; Packages of basic literacy and classroom materials delivered o every primary school in the country;  A school survey undertaken in every basic education school in Timor Leste; Training of Lecturers in the English Language Curriculum at the National University of Timor Leste; Management and Leadership Training provided for senior staff within the Ministry of Education
